What was historically made so that employees who stayed with the same employer for a certain amount of time could be rewarded, this form of long service leave is actually inaccessible to the majority of Australian workers in the construction or building industry nowadays.

Understanding the Portable Long Service Scheme

The entity that actually administers long service to both employers and employees is known as the Long Service Corporation, and they provide a portable service to any NSW-based construction or building workers.

Put simply, they basically allow you, the worker, to perform jobs for a range of different employers – or just as a subcontractor – and they will acknowledge your consistent work over the years through an online membership portal.

Using the Long Service Portal

In order for a record of the employee’s service to be kept, employers need to register with Long Service Corporation so that they can advise the Corporation that supplied labour for them each year (it’s crucial that employers do this in order for their contractors and employees to receive their full entitlements) – including members of any partnerships who employ workers on wages or just sole traders.

Worker’s Service

Whether a worker is either starting or ending their employment, it’s the employers job to tell the Corporation within the next 7 days (regardless of how many days they work in the week) – keep in mind there will be penalties if you don’t do this within 7 days. Aside from this, you also need to give them information about any workers who you employ by the 30th of June every year.

Returning Workers

If one of your workers only works occasionally throughout the year, the return can reflect the entire financial year as essentially being a period of employment – just make sure you’ve ticked the part-time box and included how many days throughout the year they’ve actually worked.

Part-Time Workers

Similarly, a worker needs to be categorised as part-time when you’re filling out the employer return (as well as how many days they worked within that time) if you’ve got a part-time worker who works just a few days every week or month.

Casual Workers

As for casual workers, though, they need to be shown as full-time (including the full period of employment) if they work for a limited period or full-time in general.
