If your business pays contractors, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about the TPAR—but what exactly is it, and do you need to lodge one?

The Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR) is a key compliance requirement for many Australian businesses, and the penalties for missing the deadline can add up quickly. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a TPAR?

TPAR stands for Taxable Payments Annual Report. It’s a report that certain businesses must lodge with the ATO each year to disclose payments made to contractors for services.

The report includes details such as:
– Contractor names
– ABNs
– Total payments made
– Any GST included

Why Do I Need to Lodge a TPAR?

The TPAR helps the ATO:
– Detect undeclared income and unpaid tax
– Cross-check information reported by contractors
– Ensure fairness across industries

If you’re paying contractors and don’t report it, your business could face penalties and increased scrutiny from the ATO.

What Businesses Must Lodge a TPAR?

You must lodge a TPAR if you are in one of the following industries and paid contractors during the financial year:
– Building and construction services
– Cleaning services
– Courier and road freight services
– Information technology (IT) services
– Security, investigation, or surveillance services

You may also need to lodge a TPAR if you offer mixed services and payments to contractors in the above categories make up at least 10% of your total income.

When Is the TPAR Due?

The TPAR is due by 28 August each year and covers contractor payments made during the previous financial year (1 July to 30 June).
